Google’s Page Rank Update

As many are no doubt aware Google has just completed their latest page rank update. As a result of this update this site has been dumped down from a PR 1 to PR 0. Now, i’m not too upset by this (although it would be nice to at least have kept the 1…) as I know the blog is new and has still got a long way to go so PR 0 is probably fair. I am, however, slightly surprised as I have had the PR 1 for a good while now, and before I started this blog the domain c-online.co.uk was just sitting there for a good few years not really being used for anything except the occasional script/site testing.

So, not really sure why I was given the PR 1 in the first place, but I do think it’s strange that now the domain is being used and the site is being updated fairly regularly, and is getting some visitors, Google have decided to take it away.

Anyone else had any weird/good/bad PR changes after this update?

This is my best guess on it. A while back a number of sites were punished for link selling. Because of the punishment of these sites it seemed that legit sites got a little boost, sort of like a see-saw effect. Matt Cutts recently mentioned on his blog that a lot of the penalties were expiring this update so as people have pulled back in line with what Google wants the see-saw has levelled out again. I’ve heard reports of what were “dodgy” sites going back up whilst ligit sites have either stayed the same or even gone down a bit.

Page rank is all about the back links, keep writing content that people want to link to as as well as pro-actively looking for links and you’ll be fine. Not that PR really seems to matter in terms of search results anyway :)

Thanks for the explanation Paul, seems like a funny thing for Google to have done (the first lopsided see-saw bit I mean). But what do I know? Still trying to get to grips with all this SEO stuff.

Sorry for taking a while to respond to this… Akismet thought you trying to spam me and helpfully tucked your comment away out of my sight.
